Junior Programme – Junior Cycle

At Tyndall College Carlow, we prepare our students for the new Junior Cycle. The new Junior Cycle is designed to support the kinds of learning experiences that help students connect to and engage positively with learning. Through its breadth and flexibility, it encourages innovation and supports creative learning in the classroom. In moving away from a focus on a final centrally provided examination, it re-positions assessment where research tells us it matters most – in classrooms. It also facilitates schools in ensuring that literacy, numeracy and key skills are embedded in the learning taking place.

We make sure that every student is able to maximise their potential by offering a flexible range of subjects, as well as a range of specially designed short course and recognition of wider school achievement. The new Junior Cycle leads of a State Exams Commission awarded Profile of Achievement after the three-year programme. All learning is underpinned by integrated Keys Skills. Key Skills help students develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes to face the many challenges in today’s world. They also support students in learning how to learn and to take responsibility for their own learning.

All students take a core-programme that incorporates the following subjects:

  • Irish
  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Wellbeing – includes: – Civic, Social and Political Education (CSPE) – Social, Personal and Health Education (SPHE) – Physical Education
  • Religious Education (RE) – as a multi-belief, non-denominational school, religious education at Tyndall College is a study of the ethics, values and beliefs systems of world religions.

Performance Advice and Support

We meet with every student to ensure that their choice of programme, including core, optional subjects and short courses meets their potential and their own specific needs, interests and ambitions. We will advise students and their parents/guardians on the best combination of subjects and short courses and also on any individual learning needs/exemptions etc. Most students will study between eight and ten subjects or their equivalents (depending on the number of short courses taken/Available). The specific programme undertaken is dependent on student enrollment, resources and student needs.
